Key takeaways

  • The central subsidy is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third, so ₹78,000 at most. Hill, north-eastern and island states get ₹85,800.
  • Some states add their own money on top. Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Haryana do today.
  • Apply on the portal before you install. Since 1 June 2026 subsidised systems must use panels made with Indian cells.
  • A 3 kW system costs about ₹1.52 to ₹1.62 lakh after the subsidy and pays back in around five years.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is the central government scheme that pays homes a fixed subsidy for putting solar panels on their roof. You apply on pmsuryaghar.gov.in, a registered vendor installs the system, and once your DISCOM commissions it the money goes straight into your bank account. The scheme runs until March 2027.

This guide covers how much you get, what your state adds, what the system costs after the subsidy, the loan on offer, and the steps to apply without getting your claim rejected.

How much subsidy does PM Surya Ghar give?

The subsidy is paid per kW of solar you install, and it stops growing at 3 kW. Most states get ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third. The special category states get 10% more.

System sizeMost statesSpecial category states

Housing societies

A housing society or RWA gets ₹18,000 per kW (₹19,800 in special category states) for solar on common areas such as lifts, pumps, corridor lights and shared EV chargers. The size is capped at 3 kW for each house in the society and 500 kW in total. Flats that want solar for their own bill apply separately on their own connection.

Extra subsidy from your state

A few states pay their own amount on top of the central subsidy. These schemes open and close with state budgets, so treat the table as a starting point and confirm with your DISCOM or state agency before you sign.

A few details the table can’t hold. Delhi’s top-up, approved in September 2026, takes the combined subsidy up to ₹1.56 lakh and the state also covers any gap to the tendered price. Tamil Nadu pays ₹5,000 for 1 kW, ₹10,000 for 2 kW and ₹22,000 for 3 kW or more. Haryana pays a smaller amount to families earning ₹1.8 to ₹3 lakh a year. Under Maharashtra’s SMART scheme, BPL homes pay ₹2,500, SC and ST homes ₹5,000 and other low-use homes ₹10,000 for a 1 kW system.

What a home system costs after the subsidy

Price guides published in 2026 put installed home systems with DCR panels in these ranges. Your final price depends on the roof, the structure height, the panel and inverter brands and how far the installer travels.

Above 3 kW the subsidy stays at ₹78,000, so each extra kW costs you the full price. See the price for each size, with the subsidy already taken off, on solar system price by size.

The solar loan under the scheme

Banks lend for PM Surya Ghar systems up to 3 kW without collateral, at the RBI repo rate plus 0.5%. With the repo rate at 5.25% since August 2026, that works out to 5.75%.

  • Up to ₹2 lakh: SBI charges 5.75% and asks for no income proof or minimum credit score.
  • ₹2 lakh to ₹6 lakh: SBI charges 7.90%, needs a CIBIL score of 650 or more and a yearly income of at least ₹3 lakh. Systems up to 10 kW qualify.
  • Terms: up to 10 years including a 6-month moratorium, at least 10% paid by you, no processing fee and no penalty for paying early.

A ₹2 lakh loan at 5.75% over 10 years costs about ₹2,195 a month. The subsidy arrives after commissioning, so many families use it to pay down the loan early. Try other amounts in the solar EMI calculator.

Who can apply

You qualify if

  • The electricity connection is residential and in your name.
  • You have a roof or terrace with enough shade-free space, about 100 sq ft per kW.
  • The connection has not already received a central rooftop solar subsidy.

You don’t qualify if

The connection is commercial or industrial. Shops, offices, factories, hotels and institutions are not covered. A business that buys a system outright can claim accelerated depreciation instead; see solar for business.

Tenants

There is no separate rule for tenants. In practice the connection has to be in your name and the owner has to give written permission for the roof, and DISCOMs differ on what they accept. Ask yours before you pay a vendor anything.

How to Apply for PM Surya Ghar Yojna, Step By Step

  1. Register on pmsuryaghar.gov.in with your state, DISCOM, consumer number and mobile number.
  2. Log in with your mobile number and the OTP, and fill in the rooftop solar application with your consumer number.
  3. Wait for your DISCOM’s feasibility approval. Systems up to 10 kW now get deemed approval, so this step should not hold you up.
  4. Once feasibility is approved, pick a vendor registered for your state and add your bank details. Agree the price in writing, with the panel model, cell type and inverter named.
  5. Get the system installed and upload the installation details on the portal. Apply for the net meter at the same time.
  6. The DISCOM inspects the system, fits the net meter and issues a commissioning certificate.
  7. When the DISCOM’s inspection report reaches you, redeem the subsidy on the portal. It is paid to the bank account you added.

Each stage shows up on your portal dashboard as it is completed. For every screen, the status stages and fixes for stuck applications, see how to apply for PM Surya Ghar and check your status.

Keep these ready

  • A recent electricity bill for the connection
  • A bank account in the same name as the electricity connection
  • The vendor’s invoice with panel model and serial numbers
  • The DCR certificate for the panels

How big a system should you get?

Each kW makes about 120 units a month on average in India, more in Rajasthan and Gujarat and less in the north-east. Divide the units on a typical monthly bill by 120 for a starting size, then check that your roof has room.

Monthly unitsSuggested sizeSubsidy (most states)
Up to 1501 to 1.5 kW₹30,000 to ₹45,000
150 to 3002 to 2.5 kW₹60,000 to ₹69,000
300 or more3 kW₹78,000

3 kW is the smallest size that gets the full subsidy. Going bigger only pays if you use the extra units yourself, because most DISCOMs pay ₹2 to ₹4 for units you export, far less than what you pay for units you buy.

A worked payback example

A family in Lucknow uses 300 units a month and pays about ₹2,500, so roughly ₹8.30 a unit. A 3 kW system makes about 360 units a month, which covers their use. They save about ₹30,000 a year.

The system costs ₹2.35 lakh. After the ₹78,000 central subsidy and Uttar Pradesh’s ₹30,000, they pay about ₹1.27 lakh, so the system pays back in a little over four years. Without the state top-up it would take about five. Panels carry a 25-year performance warranty, so the years after that cost only cleaning and, at some point, a new inverter.

Is the electricity really free?

The name promises free electricity, but nothing is waived on your bill. The scheme is built so that a typical home with a 3 kW system makes over 300 units a month, which covers most homes’ use. The “free” units are the ones your panels make. Your bill still carries fixed charges, and units you take from the grid at night are netted against what you export under your state’s rules.

Mistakes that get claims rejected

  • Installing before applying on the portal. A system put up without an application can’t claim the subsidy.
  • Panels without Indian-made cells. Since 1 June 2026 subsidised systems must use panels whose cells are on the government’s ALMM List-II.
  • A vendor who is not registered for the scheme in your state, or one the portal has deactivated after complaints.
  • Bank details in a different name from the electricity connection.

After installation

Net metering

Your DISCOM fits a net meter that counts the units you send to the grid. How those units are credited depends on your state: some set them against your imports, others pay a fixed rate per exported unit. Check before you size up beyond your own use.

When the money arrives

The government says the subsidy is paid within 30 days of commissioning, and clean applications in 2026 are being paid in about three to four weeks. Mismatched names and missing documents are what slow it down.

Maintenance

Vendors under the scheme have to maintain the system for five years. Rinse the panels with plain water every few weeks in dry months and glance at the inverter display now and then. A sudden drop in daily units is usually the first sign of a problem.

How far the scheme has got

By 4 August 2026, 50.06 lakh homes had rooftop systems under the scheme, adding up to 14.8 GW, and ₹28,024 crore had been paid out as subsidy. The target is 1 crore homes by March 2027. Reports in September 2026 say the government is considering a short extension and a second phase with batteries, but nothing has been announced.
