Charging at home is what makes an electric vehicle cheap to run: a home unit costs ₹6 to ₹9, against ₹15 to ₹26 at public fast chargers. A good home charger makes that easy and safe.
We are adding ev chargers to this comparison now. Every product is checked against its datasheet before it appears here.

What to compare
Power
A higher-powered charger fills the battery faster, but only up to what your car’s onboard charger accepts. Paying for more power than the car can take gives no benefit.
AC or DC
Home chargers are AC. DC fast chargers are for public and fleet use and cost far more to install. See AC and DC charging.
Connector
The connector must match your vehicle. Check it against the car’s manual before you buy.
App control and scheduling
A timer or app lets you charge in cheaper hours or while your rooftop solar is producing, which cuts your cost per km further.
Warranty and installation
Check who installs it, whether installation is included, and the warranty length. A proper installation includes the right cable, a dedicated circuit and earthing.
Before you install
- Check your sanctioned load and ask your DISCOM to raise it if needed (costs and steps are in our home EV charger installation guide)
- In an apartment, get the housing society’s approval and a supply point at your parking spot
- Plan the cable route from your meter to where the car is parked
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a wall charger for my EV?
Not always. Many cars come with a portable charger for a heavy-duty socket. A wall charger is faster and safer for daily use.
Can I charge my EV from rooftop solar?
Yes. Each kW of rooftop solar makes about 120 units a month, and a charger with a timer lets you charge while the panels are producing.
How much does home charging cost?
At ₹8 a unit, an electric car costs about ₹1.30 per km. A car covering 1,500 km a month costs about ₹2,000.
