Key takeaways

  • The standard solar panel size for homes in 2026 is about 2278 × 1134 mm, or 7 ft 6 in × 3 ft 9 in, and weigh 27 to 32 kg.
  • A 540 W PERC panel and a 580 W TOPCon panel are the same size. Better cells, not bigger frames, give the extra watts.
  • Shorter 108-cell panels (about 5 ft 8 in long) fit awkward roofs and narrow staircases better.
  • A 3 kW system needs 5 to 7 panels, about 150 to 170 sq ft of panel area and roughly 300 sq ft of roof.

A typical solar panel size for Indian homes today is about 2.28 m by 1.13 m, roughly 7.5 by 3.7 feet, for a panel of 540 to 590 W. That single size covers most rooftop quotes you will see, but not all of them. Panel size decides how many panels fit your roof, whether they go up your stairs, and how much weight sits on your slab. This guide lists solar panel sizes and wattage side by side, in millimetres and feet, with weights, then works out what fits a 3 kW roof.

Typical frame sizes from 2024–2026 datasheets. Exact sizes vary by a few millimetres between makers; always check the datasheet of the model on your quote.

Notice that the 540 W and the 590 W rows share one frame. The difference is the cell: TOPCon cells turn more of the same sunlight into power. That is why a higher wattage does not always mean a bigger panel, and why the type of cell matters more than the frame. Whether the extra watts are worth paying for is worked out in TOPCon vs Mono PERC vs HJT.

Solar panel size in feet, for measuring your roof

Measure your roof in feet and lay the panels out on paper before the installer visits. The common sizes, rounded for planning:

  • Standard 144-cell (540–590 W): 7 ft 6 in long, 3 ft 9 in wide, about 28 sq ft.
  • Short 108-cell (410–440 W): 5 ft 8 in long, 3 ft 9 in wide, about 21 sq ft.
  • Long 132-cell (600–640 W): 7 ft 10 in long, 3 ft 9 in wide, about 29 sq ft.

Panels can be fixed lengthwise (portrait) or sideways (landscape). On a long, narrow terrace, landscape rows often fit one more panel. Leave about 2 ft clear along the parapet and between rows so panels do not shade each other in winter, when the sun is low.

Solar panel size for a 3 kW system

Panel area only. With gaps between rows and a path to clean, plan on about 300 sq ft of shade-free roof for 3 kW.

The fewest panels is not always the best layout. Five 620 W panels make 3.1 kW in the least space, but six 540 or 580 W panels are easier to arrange in two rows of three and are what most installers stock. How heavy are solar panels, and can your roof take them?

A standard panel weighs 27 kg with a plastic backsheet and 31 to 32 kg as glass-glass. For 3 kW that is about 160 to 190 kg of panels, plus the steel or aluminium structure, spread over around 300 sq ft. That works out to roughly 11 to 13 kg per square metre, well below what an accessible RCC roof slab is normally designed to carry.

Weight is rarely the problem on a concrete roof; wind is. An elevated structure acts like a sail, so it must be anchored or ballasted properly. On tin or asbestos sheds, ask the installer to check the purlins before fixing anything, and avoid walking on the sheets.

Getting panels onto the roof

A 7.5 ft, 30 kg sheet of glass needs two people and a clear path. Narrow or winding staircases are where panels get chipped or cracked, often invisibly. If your stairwell has a tight turn, ask for the panels to be hoisted up the outside with ropes, or choose the shorter 108-cell size. Panels should be carried on their edge, never flat by the corners, and never stood on.

Small 12 V panels vary widely in shape; these are common sizes. Prices for small panels are in our solar panel price guide.

These 12 V panels are for battery charging and small kits, not for rooftop systems connected to the grid. Their prices per watt are much higher than rooftop panels; see solar panel price in India.

Which panel size suits your roof?

  • Plenty of open roof: standard 144-cell, 540 to 590 W.
  • Roof just big enough for 3 kW: 600 W-plus panels, five instead of six.
  • Odd shapes, water tanks, narrow stairs: shorter 108-cell panels.
  • Tin shed: lighter glass-backsheet panels on a checked structure.
  • Avoid for homes: 690 W-plus HJT panels, too big and heavy for most terraces.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard solar panel size in India?

Most rooftop panels in 2026 are about 2278 × 1134 mm, or 7 ft 6 in × 3 ft 9 in, for 540 to 590 W. Shorter 108-cell panels of about 1722 × 1134 mm are used for 410 to 440 W.

What is the size of a 550 W solar panel in feet?

About 7 ft 6 in long and 3 ft 9 in wide, roughly 28 sq ft. It weighs about 27 kg, or 31 to 32 kg in a glass-glass version.

How many solar panels are needed for 3 kW?

Six panels of 540 to 580 W, five of 620 W, or seven of 430 W. Six 540 W panels make 3.24 kW.

How much does a solar panel weigh?

A standard 540 to 590 W panel weighs 27 to 32 kg. Smaller 410 to 440 W panels weigh about 22 kg, and 100 W panels about 7 kg.

Is a higher wattage solar panel bigger?

Not always. A 540 W PERC and a 580 W TOPCon panel share the same 2278 × 1134 mm frame; the TOPCon cells are simply more efficient. Panels above about 600 W are a little longer.

How much roof area does a 3 kW solar system need?

About 300 sq ft of shade-free roof, of which the panels themselves take 150 to 170 sq ft. The rest is space between rows and a path for cleaning.
