Rooftop solar in India comes down to four questions: how big a system you need, what it costs after the PM Surya Ghar subsidy, how many units it will make on your roof, and how you will pay for it. Each tool below answers one of them with your own numbers.

How much subsidy you get under PM Surya Ghar
The central subsidy is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third kW, so it tops out at ₹78,000 for a 3 kW system. Hill states, the North East and the islands get ₹33,000 and ₹19,800, up to ₹85,800. The money is paid into your bank account after the system is commissioned.
| System size | Most states | Special category states |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kW | ₹30,000 | ₹33,000 |
| 2 kW | ₹60,000 | ₹66,000 |
| 3 kW or more | ₹78,000 | ₹85,800 |
What a home system costs
Published 2026 price guides put a 1 kW system at about ₹1.20 to ₹1.30 lakh, 2 kW at ₹1.80 to ₹1.90 lakh and 3 kW at ₹2.30 to ₹2.40 lakh before the subsidy. After subsidy, a 2 kW system comes to roughly ₹1.20 to ₹1.30 lakh.
How big a system you need
Each kW of rooftop solar makes about 120 units a month on average and needs about 100 sq ft of roof with no shade. Divide the units on a typical monthly bill by 120 and you have a sensible starting size. Across the plains, output is highest in Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi and lowest in the North East, so the solar calculator adjusts for your state.
Check these before you install
- Apply on the national rooftop solar portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in) before the installation, not after.
- Use panels made with Indian cells (DCR) from the government’s approved model list (ALMM), or the subsidy claim can be rejected.
- The subsidy is for residential connections only. Shops, offices and factories are not eligible.
- Your DISCOM installs the net meter, which credits the extra units you send to the grid.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get the subsidy on a system bigger than 3 kW?
Yes, but the amount stays at ₹78,000 (₹85,800 in special category states). Anything above 3 kW gets no extra subsidy.
Do shops or offices get the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?
No. The central subsidy is only for residential electricity connections. Businesses can use tax benefits such as accelerated depreciation instead.
How long does the subsidy take to reach my account?
Recent 2026 reports say clean applications are being paid in about 30 days after commissioning, down from four to six months early in the scheme.
How many units does 1 kW of solar make?
About 120 units a month, or 4 a day, on average across India. It ranges from about 92 a month in Sikkim to 131 in Rajasthan, and about 160 in high-altitude Ladakh.
