How much power do home appliances use?
These are the typical figures the calculator starts from. The wattage is what the appliance draws while running; units a month allow for appliances that cycle on and off. Your own appliance label is the final word.

How many watts does an AC use?
A 1.5 ton inverter AC is rated at about 1,500 W and a 1 ton at about 1,000 W. That is the most they draw. Once the room reaches the set temperature the compressor slows down, so six hours a night uses closer to 6 units than 9. A 5-star model uses noticeably less than a 3-star one for the same cooling. Setting it at 24 to 26°C instead of 18 to 20°C cuts use further.
How many watts does a fridge use?
A single-door or small double-door fridge of 190 to 260 litres draws about 100 to 200 W while the compressor runs, but it runs only part of the time. Across a day it uses roughly 0.8 to 1.2 units, or 25 to 35 a month. The BEE star label on the door gives the tested yearly figure for your model.
Connected load vs sanctioned load
Your connected load is every appliance added up as if all ran together. Your sanctioned load is the kW your DISCOM has approved for your connection, printed on the bill. Homes rarely run everything at once, so the connected load is usually higher than the peak you actually draw. If you are adding an AC, rooftop solar or an EV charger, check that your sanctioned load is enough; many DISCOMs cap rooftop solar at the sanctioned load.
From load to solar size
Divide your monthly units by 120 for the India average, or by your state’s figure, and round up to the next half kW. A home using 311 units a month needs about 3 kW. The calculator does this for your state.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the load of my house?
Add the watts of every appliance, multiplied by how many you have. Divide by 1,000 for kW. For monthly units, multiply each appliance’s watts by its daily hours, add them up, divide by 1,000 and multiply by 30.
AC kitne watt ka hota hai?
A 1 ton inverter AC is about 1,000 W and a 1.5 ton about 1,500 W at full power. In use they average less because the compressor slows once the room is cool.
Fridge kitne watt ka hota hai?
A 190 to 260 litre fridge draws about 100 to 200 W while running and uses roughly 1 unit a day.
How many units does a ceiling fan use?
A regular 75 W fan running 12 hours uses about 0.9 units a day. A BLDC fan at about 30 W uses about 0.36, less than half.
What sanctioned load do I need for a 1.5 ton AC?
The AC adds about 1.5 kW. Add that to your other appliances and compare with the sanctioned load on your bill. If the total is well above it, apply to your DISCOM to raise the load before you install.
